Heledd Fychan, Healthy Air Champion

Senedd Regional Member for South Wales Central,
Plaid Cymru and Spokesperson for Culture, Sport & International Affairs

As a Healthy Air Champion, Heledd raises awareness of the impact of poor air quality on our everyday lives.

Alongside Healthy Air Cymru’s other Healthy Air Champions, Heledd is working hard to secure a Clean Air Act for Wales.

Heledd was elected to the Senedd in May 2021. Prior to that she was a Councillor representing Pontypridd and Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales. She is a member of various cross-party groups including the Cross-party Group for a Clean Air Act, as well as the Senedd’s Standards and Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport, and International Relations Committees.

Heledd says:

‘I don’t want my young son, or any child, growing up in a country where simply breathing in the air around you can damage your lungs. I’m proud to be a Clean Air Champion for Healthy Air Cymru, and will use my voice to push for a clean air act as soon as possible.’

Air pollution contributes to almost 1,400 early deaths in Wales and costs the Welsh NHS almost £1billion every year.

Many families across Wales feel the impact of air pollution on their daily lives. More and more children are developing asthma, their lungs are not developing as they should be, and people’s existing health conditions are getting worse.

To save lives, and improve the health of the nation, we need legislation as soon as possible to clean up the air that we breathe.
